Abstract

This study was designed to analyze and compare the curriculums of Health Informatics in foreign countries. The subjects were drawn by convenience from the Home Pages in the Internet and the research works published on the international journals of health informatics.
The data were collected from Aug. 1998 to Jan. 1999, and analyzed by content analysis, of which the frame was developed by the researcher. The results of the study were as follows

1. Among 10 schools, two of them were BS programs, the other one was diploma course, and the rest were graduate courses. The length of the study was 4 years for the BS program, and 3-5years for the Ph.D, and 2 years for most of the Master¢¥s degree except one which required 4.5 years.
2. Most of the schools opened on the year 1980, while one of them started its class as late as on Sept. 1998. It shows the academia of Health Informatics is fairly new.
3. The admission requirements for the graduate course included taking the subjects of Mathematics, Computer Science, and Science with satisfactory marks. The number of students for each program varied from 7 to 28 per year. There was 35 students per semester for one school. The number of professors varied form 3 to 17 for full-time, 6 to 50 for part-time.
4. The objectives of the BS programs were developing competent graduates both in knowledge and technical skills in Health Informatics, and the researchers and leaders in the field of Health Informatics for the graduate programs.
5. For the contents of BS program, the main categories were Informatics, Computer Science, and the subjects related to the medicine. The research methodology was . added for the graduate courses besides these subjects.
In summary, the core of the curriculum was designed around computer science, medical informatics, and the subjects related to the medicine. The objectives of the curriculum were development of the researchers and leaders in the areas of Health Informatics who are competent both in knowledge and technical skills

Based on the above findings the followings are suggested.
1. It is suggested to conduct a study to develop Health Informatics Curriculum for the BS program.
2. It is necessary to develop programs for the short term and long term training program in the area of Health Informatics.
